Hello, everyone! Thanks for your patience waiting for this email. This week has been a lot busier than I expected! Pesky day job and all that.
I know I speak for all of your instructors when I say it was truly a pleasure to get to meet you. You care enough about nature to take action. What more do I need to say?
All about your Level 1 certification or Skills Course completion
I've submitted your class completion to both Leave No Trace and to NCAC. Leave No Trace will email me your certificates. It will probably be sometime the week of 10/14. The person who processes course competions is also the person who ran the Leave No Trace Global Summit conference this past week. She's been just a little bit busy! I'll email your certificate to you when I receive it.
The students from NCAC should see the course show up in their my.scouting record soon. If it's not there in a couple of weeks, you may need to take the completion card you received at the end of class, or your Leave No Trace certificate, to the council office to have your record updated.
NCAC cannot update the records of people not registered in NCAC. Students from other councils should contact their council office to find out how to get the course completion added to their my.scouting record.
New Level 1 Instructors receive a complementary 6-month membership to Leave No Trace. You should get a confirmation email from Leave No Trace, once again probably the week of 10/14. Leave No Trace members receive a code to get 20% off orders from lnt.org, along with other benefits. Leave No Trace membership starts at $25 a year.
To maintain your Level 1 Instructor certification you need to be a Leave No Trace member and take a probably-hour-long online refresher course every 2 years. The course isn't available yet, so I can't say for sure how long it will be. It will cost $25. If your certification ever lapses because you didn't do either or both of those requirements, you can restore your certification by becoming a Leave No Trace member and taking the refresher course.
Your course completion with Scouting America will not expire or require that you complete the Leave No Trace certification requirements. Students who have completed the Level 1 Instructor course do not need to be currently certified with Leave No Trace to teach the Scouting America Outdoor Ethics Orientation and Leave No Trace Basics courses.
Students who have completed the Skills course don't have any membership or refresher course requirements and don't receive a complimentary Leave No Trace membership.
Basecamp
Every student including those not in NCAC will receive an invitation to join the NCAC Leave No Trace Level 1 & Skills team on NCAC's Basecamp site. Basecamp is a great way to keep in touch with students from your and many other classes. You'll hear success stories, tips, and Leave No Trace / Outdoor Ethics related news. Team members can share docs & files that you can use. It's a great resource.
Newsletter
Sara Holtz puts out a tremendous monthly Outdoor Ethics newsletter. It's primarily NCAC focused, but much of the content is valuable to people in other councils as well. Hundreds of people have subscribed from well over 30 different councils across the country. The Most Important Thing
The most important thing you can do is to follow through on the action plan you created during the course. Your instructors would be absolutely delighted to hear from you about how things are going with your action plan.
